Background of the Study
Rural electrification has been recognized as a critical factor in promoting socio-economic development and improving living standards in many rural areas of Nigeria. In Kuje Local Government Area (LGA), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the lack of reliable access to electricity has led to widespread dependence on traditional sources of energy such as firewood and charcoal for cooking and heating. This overreliance on biomass fuels has contributed to deforestation, as forests are cleared to meet the energy needs of rural communities. The introduction of rural electrification programs aims to reduce the environmental strain caused by the use of firewood, thereby promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation. However, the extent to which rural electrification has impacted deforestation in Kuje LGA remains unclear. This study aims to assess the relationship between rural electrification and deforestation, examining whether the provision of electricity has helped reduce the pressure on forest resources (Ogunyemi & Adeola, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the ongoing rural electrification efforts in Kuje, deforestation continues to be a significant environmental challenge. The relationship between the availability of electricity and the reduction of deforestation has not been adequately researched. This study will investigate how rural electrification has impacted the rate of deforestation in Kuje LGA, providing a clearer understanding of the effectiveness of these programs in conserving forest resources.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To assess the impact of rural electrification on the rate of deforestation in Kuje Local Government Area.
• To examine the role of rural electrification in reducing dependence on firewood and charcoal in Kuje.
• To evaluate the environmental benefits of rural electrification programs in Kuje LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
• What is the impact of rural electrification on deforestation in Kuje Local Government Area?
• Has rural electrification reduced the dependence on firewood and charcoal in Kuje?
• What are the broader environmental benefits of rural electrification in Kuje?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Rural electrification has led to a significant reduction in deforestation in Kuje Local Government Area.
• H2: The introduction of rural electrification has reduced the dependence of rural households on firewood and charcoal for energy.
• H3: Rural electrification programs contribute to environmental sustainability by mitigating deforestation in Kuje.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide important data on the effectiveness of rural electrification programs in reducing environmental degradation, particularly deforestation, in Kuje Local Government Area. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, environmental agencies, and NGOs involved in rural energy development. By demonstrating the potential environmental benefits of rural electrification, this study will support the broader agenda of promoting clean and sustainable energy alternatives in rural communities (Ogunyemi & Adeola, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kuje Local Government Area and will assess the impact of rural electrification on deforestation within the area. Limitations include difficulties in obtaining precise data on forest cover and potential biases from community perceptions of rural electrification programs.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
• Rural Electrification: The provision of electricity to rural communities that previously lacked access to power.
• Deforestation: The process of clearing forests for agricultural, commercial, or fuelwood use, leading to the loss of forest cover.
• Environmental Sustainability: The capacity to maintain environmental health and resource availability for future generations.
